There was some water level fluctuations yesterday thanks to hydropower operations and when the water was down briefly a fair amount of fish were seen in the upstream areas. The presentation is not that technical, just look for favorable winds and water color. Still lots of water in the Oak at slightly high and slightly stained with about 2 ft of visibility. The northeast coastal weather put a damper on show attendance and the vendors participating were down some thanks to Covid worry but the anglers who did visit the show had good interest in all of the Lake Ontario trout and salmon fishing opportunities. FREE boat launching until the Spring! Once pressured, browns may move a little distance from the tails of the salmon but they will still likely be in the closest broken water downstream. Capt. That good run of Kings in the Oak from end of last week has spread out nearest the dam, but guys are finding pods of spawning fish in the downstream fast water reaches. So anglers can mix it up with that turbine tunnel action at the dam or they can work their way downstream for more traditional drifts thru holes and runs. Flows for now are slightly high or maybe one click less consisting of all turbine water at 2+ feet of visibility. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Looking forward to more angler reports and success but over all the fishing pressure has been real light. Avoid surfaces that are touched often, such as doorknobs, handrails, and playground equipment. Any future accumulating snow and melt may do that. At least whatever trib and near shore Lake Ontario trout action that is underway is not likely to experience a temp spike anytime soon. And we barely got clipped by the worst of it like SW of the area around Buffalo got it! Just a handful of cars seen at each access spot. The imagery will change every 6 months to promote the upcoming fishing season. To the east flows are also somewhat higher then typical fall flows with slightly stained water color. Second season trout action now with light fishing pressure and still reasonable weather with all kinds of water to fish seems like the name of the game right now! On the south end of Newark has been a great place for catching bass. Slight bump up in trib flows yesterday from little bit of rain and snowmelt. To the west at Johnson Creek, flows are medium and mostly clear with reports of some brown trout hookups. Boat angling easily the least expensive bargain for big salmonid angling chances where you get to feel the strike and experience an honest battle without heavier trolling gear. We started the morning in the same water we had been fishing. The other area smaller waterways offer as good or better action by virtue of smaller water courses with the fish probably more concentrated. It was so good we turned two doubles on the same rod, and caught a Coho on a meat rig that was dragging on the surface in the prop wash. Then the hit and misses kept on coming. Theres been on and off good action like at the Archers Club and some Kings continue to drop back from the dam. Not much precipitation was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. Production of hard copies is finished and have been delivered to License Issuing Agents. Not a blow out but enough precipitation to bump everything up with a nice spate of water for some fresh fish migrations. Theres no part of the driftable or castable or swingable waterway that is frozen over. We encourage all anglers and users to follow the site rules for access and fishing on the Brookfield Power Company lands. Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. The nuances of fish migrations is an inexact science and we cannot predict the future. Water visibility was about 6-foot at the time. Thru this beginning part of the week, most hook up action has still been mostly for Kings. Last week, on good flows, there was good action, then tougher again thru the past weekend on higher flows and now this week before another potential rise in flows there are a few more guys out there getting scattered hook ups. Point Breeze/Orleans County/east side boat launch is still closed while construction is hopefully soon to wrap up. These events were very well received last season despite very short notice. This is in some contrast to earlier reports of mostly Kings kicking around on the lowering flows. Boaters are asked to use the Oak Orchard State Marine Park on the WEST side of the River on Archbald Rd. Remember use caution in interpreting the upstream USGS gauging stations on the Oak that can mean little or nothing for flows downstream of the Waterport hydro especially in considering both the turbine channel and overflow channel. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. Any new precipitation could likewise bring those flows back up and dirty. There were some hook ups thru the past weekend right before this latest rise in flows. Any significant rainfall could raise flows up more with dirtier water color.
